There are alot of so called Christian groups. But how many of really are? I have high standards when it comes to music, I only listen to Christian groups and they have to be real. Alot of them say that they are quiet about thier faith. Look, if we are ashamed of God, He will be ashamed of us. We should never be quiet about our faith! God gave you the talents you have. Why not use them for is glory instead of your own? That's what I think about it. What do you think? Do you just think music is music and listen to whatever sounds good, or do feel like I do? Or do you think I'm going overboard?

Oh yeah! Have you ever heard of Petra? They started in like the '70's and only just recently retired. Their lyrics are totally in your face and that's why I love it.

OK, I'm old enough to have been raised in the 70's, and I was never into the 'big hair' sound. But, I'm loving the Christian rap coming out of south Houston right now. LeCrae has a way of chewing up the gospel and spitting it back out in a clear, understandable way. I drive a little red Saturn sport coupe with the sunroof open, blasting my witness everywhere!

As for music, I'm not as puritan as you, Jlynn. I love diversity. I listen to just about anything but "scream-o", secular urban rap such as Eminem, and "Bluegrass"; however, I still believe lyrics and what the song is saying is very important. I like many styles, and I check the lyrics before listening. I believe it doesn't have to be christian to be a good song. Ever heard "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" by the Charlie Daniels Band? Classic.
As far as the concern about Christian groups, I believe it is VERY important for a group to be open about their faith. I hate all the ambiguity surrounding many groups recently. Remember Jump5? If I remember correctly they starting out as a Christian group with Christian songs, but they settled and sold out and went with Disney. It's stories like that that are disgraceful and heart-breaking, and makes Christian groups look bad, plus a group loses their integrity through something like this.

i think its awsome if a person listens mostly or only to christian music if its their choice. but i think its overreacting for parents to tell their kids that their not allowed to listen to ANY secular music at all. because that just makes them want to rebel and listen to secular music even more and soon before you kno it they might end up rejecting christian music

You've got a really good point there Andrea. Parents often have a hard time figuring out where they still get to tell their teens what to do and where they have to let them grow up. Parents need to become coaches, helping new men & women make good decisions. Didn't God let Adam & Eve choose in the garden, even after coaching them that the fruit of that tree was a bad idea?

As a musician, I like all kinds of music, except the screaming stuff, secular urban rap, and the italian opera. I would say 99.9% of the time I am listening to Christian music. But occasionally I will hear an old Journey, Boston, or Van Halen song I like and will listen to it. I believe it's all got to do with the message. I will not listen to anything that is vulgar or dishonoring to God. As a teenager, my favorite group was Supertramp. Now i will not listen to the song Goodbye Stranger because it has a line in it that claims the devil to be his savior. I pay close attention to lyrics because that's where the message is.

I think that it is ok for Christians to listen to mildly secular music. But when secular music starts becoming inappropriate or spills out lies, it's time to step back and evaluate if that's the kind of lyrics you should let into your head. I have a friend who claims to be a Christian (most obviously not to anyone who's been around her). When she's with me, she'll pretend to be all over Christian bands, and then turn around and blast Fall-Out Boy and other strongly pro-bad stuff bands. These days, what you listen to represents you. If people call themselves Christians, others watch what they do. Listening to exremely secular bands tells people that we are just like everyone else.
I'm not saying it's impossible to listen to bad bands and still be a Christian. But these kind of songs and lyrics affect how you think, and the things that get into your head are not always good.

my Pastor just keeps it plain and simple...anything that doesn't glorify God...is sin!! i mean, he didn't start that, but the one thing i think is the WORST are so-called christian singers!! the Bible says that He would rather us be hot or cold, and if we are lukewarm, He's going to spit us out of His mouth!! OOCH!! NOT GOOD!!!! not ALL non-christian music is bad, like random songs like that have to do with nothing, like twinkle twinkle little star, for example, that's not Christian, but it's not NOT christian either, if you know wut i mean!!

When we listen to music why don't we think about what Jesus would say about that group. Would He listen to a musician that say's, 'we're just quiet about our faith' or would He listen to secular music? Even if it is clean.
I'm not sure but I am sure He would talk to them about thier faith and try to save them.

ohhh wow haha. this is actually kind of funny.
we're not supposed to listen to secular music because it doesn't glorify God?
that's like saying we can't look at pictures that aren't of Jesus. it's crazy.

fine, so we shouldn't go around listening to Satanist music. i accept that.

but when all you listen to is Christian praise music, you miss out on a lot of talented artists' work.

as long as you hold fast to what is true, I don't see anything wrong with listening to stuff like Green Day or Maroon 5

Pictures have nothing to do with music. And really it's a personal choice. I choose to listen to music that glorifies God, for one thing it can help me stay focused on Him. Music can be very powerful, but it depends on what it is used for.
