Do you think it is okay for Christians to have tattoos and piercings? Do think they send the wrong message? Or are they alright just so long as they are tastefully done?
There was a Christian at my church years ago who had plenty of piercings and tattoos, and when asked about it, she made an analogy of stained glass - decorating the temple of the Holy Spirit (as Jesus called it).
I personally don't have a problem with people who have tattoos or piercings, but I do believe it sends an immediate message. In today's society and mindset, I believe that even if a tattoo is of a Christian theme, or a piercing is tasteful or conservative (to a degree) people most often associate tattoos and piercings with goth or punk; and first impressions are important, especially if one is hoping to witness as Jesus_rocks777 mentioned.

I think its fine for christians to have tattoos. My mom's boss has a tattoo that looks like water or something like that, but when you flip it it says Jesus Saves.
I believe it is a matter of opinion. I don't believe tattoos and piercings will send you to hell or save you. It is strictly a preference. I prefer not to paint or pierce my body. I figure if God wanted me to be painted, he would have created me this way. But that is my feeling for myself. If you want it, then it's ok as long as what you have does not dishonor God or misrepresent the kingdom of heaven. I can see where D3ishaxxor is talking about first impressions. You never get a second chance to make a first impression. This could be misleading for some. But on the other hand, it can also be a good conversation starter that God can use to open up opportunities to witness. So, I refer to scripture where Paul talks about things that are stumbling blocks for the brethren.
I believe that tatoos and piercings are fine, and they can't send you to hell or save you (Romans 11:6), as Muziknut mentioned. I don't believe they leave any imprint on your faith or how you live your life(save inappropriate tatoos or piercings), but regardless of this people will judge you, you can count on that. There will always be those type who decide what you like are based on your appearance.
Another thought is that God wants us to take good care of our bodies. I believe it is a personal choice to decide whether or not pericings and tatoos will help in keeping good care of your body.
I always wondered about this subject(that's why I posted it) and you make a very good point.
personally i agree with Thy_word except I thought that the verse was just against tattoos...
i mean if a fellow believer gets a tattoo i'm not going to chew them out or look down on them for it but i'm just not ok with it.
i believe tattoos and piercing are okay.. i go to a church where almost every one has a tattoo and or a piercin.. some tattoos are tottally uncalled for and i dont like that.. but otherwise i think they are OKAY!!
im gettin mine very soon. and wen i get it done ill get some pix up on here.
I'm not for or against tattoos....but I think this Scripture is pretty cool:
And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads. Revelation 14:1
28 You shall not make any cuts on your body for the dead or tattoo yourselves: I am the Lord.
Lev 19:28 (ESV)
In those days, people were cutting themselves while worshiping their false gods (demons). The word "tattoo" used above in Leviticus 19:28 translated in Hebrew is "an incision or gash" ....see below
H7085
קַעֲקַע
qaʽăqaʽ
kah-ak-ah'
From the same as H6970; an incision or gash:— + mark.
H6970
Probably from H6972 in the original sense of cutting off;
H6972
A primitive root; to clip off;
Soap,
I guess that shows that I should delve a bit deeper, at times.
Thanks!
