Let's just talk about it, ok? I've heard folks say they are scared that the US is falling like the Roman Empire, like Babylon. Others think that we are a blessed Christian nation that will not lose its prosperity. What are your thoughts, either from your faith tradition or scripture that help you make sense of America's banking crisis?

I haven't quite formed my opinion yet but I do think it is interesting how no one can really give a good answer for how this happened. The experts are stumped..... All those fancy Wall Street tools to analyze the markets and people are just sorta looking at each other like what happened? how? what do we do now?

I was just reading Leviticus 5 where scripture explains the Jubilee & thinking of all the preachers who say that this is the year of the Jubilee. They preach God's blessing raining down upon the faithful, as long as we believe and claim it. How do we believe that in a strained economy?

What I saw in Leviticus was the disenfranchised & poor being able to return to their family's land. And, I saw those who had been making money off the land having to give it back. I saw families reunited and helping each other. I saw bond-slaves freed, able to give back to their community instead of the fruits of their labors going to their owners.

I couldn't tell you if this is a Jubilee year or not?! But,if it is, it makes sense to me that the CEO leaving WaMu should give back his few-million-dollar golden parachute to the 'bond-slaves' who have been giving the fruits of their labor through balooning mortgage interest. They should be able to go back home with something to start over! I know 'bolstering the economy' is the way of man, but I wonder if God would prefer redistributive justice right now?

I really like your analysis Chaplainnik, very interesting. I like the term, "redistributive justice". I know these are tough times for everyone, especially people who dont know our God and dont know to reach out to him but I know that God allows the storms for a reason. I really liked this ending to a Max Lucado devotional about Peter walking out to Jesus in the middle of the storm:

"As long as Jesus is one of many options, he is no option. As long as you can carry your burdens alone, you don’t need a burden bearer. As long as your situation brings you no grief, you will receive no comfort. And as long as you can take him or leave him, you might as well leave him, because he won’t be taken half-heartedly. But when you mourn, when you get to the point of sorrow for your sins, when you admit that you have no other option but to cast all your cares on him, and when there is truly no other name that you can call, then cast all your cares on him, for he is waiting in the midst of the storm."

Hey Chaplainnik, where in Leviticus 5 explains the "Jubilee"?

personally i think we need to look at the fact that the dow's record drop was 777 points...

yes, 777 points, not 778, not 776...but a distinct 777...a number near and dear to someone we know and love...who i will not name...ok, i will name her, JENNIFER SUZANNE BELCHER!!!!!!

and since 777 is like her favorite number? well, i really haven't correlated/extrapolated/evaluated anything based on this coincidence...and maybe it's just that...a coincidence...

but then again...maybe it's not...

all i want to know is Jen, where were you the night of the 27th? oh, i'm not saying you're respnosible for this financial crises we're in...but still, it does seem a BIT random that it was 777 points...you know?

i'm not saying, i'm just saying...

Oops, typo. That was Leviticus 25. As in 5 plus 20 more! The word jubilee shows up in verse 11, but the whole chapter is about giving the earth a Sabbath, and returning property to people & people to their homeland every 50th year.

Look what I found. (He's a homeboy, here in San Antontio.)

You Have Our Attention, Lord
A prayer by Max Lucado - October 2008

Our friends lost their house
The co-worker lost her job
The couple next door lost their retirement
It seems that everyone is losing their footing

This scares us. This bailout with billions.
These rumblings of depression.
These headlines: ominous, thunderous -
“Going Broke!” “Going Down!” “Going Under!” “What's Next?”

What is next?

We’re listening. And we’re admitting: You were right.

You told us this would happen.
You shot straight about loving stuff and worshipping money.
Greed will break your heart, You warned.
Money will love you and leave you.
Don’t put your hope in riches that are so uncertain.

You were right. Money is a fickle lover and we just got dumped.

We were wrong to spend what we didn’t have.
Wrong to neglect prayer and ignore the poor.
Wrong to think we ever earned a dime. We didn’t. You gave it. And now, tell us Father, are You taking it?

We’re listening. And we’re praying.
Could you make something good out of this mess?

Of course You can. You always have.
You led slaves out of slavery,
Built temples out of ruins,
Turned stormy waves into a glassy pond and water into sweet wine.
This disorder awaits your order. So do we.

Through Christ,
Amen

God will always give what is right to His people who cry to Him night and day, and He will not be slow to answer them. (Luke 18:7 NCV)

I really liked that prayer, thanks for posting. I am a fan of Max Lucado.

I like this Proverb:

Proverbs 30:8 "Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread."
